A Guide to the Chemical Constituents of Cylinder Body Materials

Regarding the chemical composition of the cylinder block material, it usually depends on the material from which it is manufactured. There are two main types of cylinder block materials: cast iron and cast aluminum.

Cast Iron Cylinder Blocks:
Cast iron cylinder blocks are generally cast using gray cast iron. In order to enhance the strength and wear resistance of the cylinder block, also used a high-quality gray cast iron containing nickel, chromium, molybdenum, phosphorus and other elements. The addition of these elements gives the cast iron cylinder block excellent strength, stiffness, wear resistance and the ability to absorb vibration.
The exact chemical composition will vary depending on different alloy formulations and manufacturing processes. Generally speaking, however, the main components of gray cast iron are iron, carbon and silicon, as well as a few other trace elements.
Cast Aluminum Cylinder Blocks:
The main alloy used in cast aluminum cylinder blocks is ADC12, a die-cast aluminum alloy, also known as No. 12 aluminum, which is an Al-Si-Cu system alloy.
ADC12 alloy chemical composition is roughly: 10.8% silicon (Si), 0.3% of magnesium (Mg), 1.3% of iron (Fe), 2.5% of copper (Cu), 1.0% of zinc (Zn), 0.5% of manganese (Mn), 0.5% of titanium (Ti), 0.3% of the impurities, and the rest of the aluminum (Al). ADC12 alloy aluminum content of the proportion of about 82.8%. The ADC12 alloy contains about 82.8% aluminum.
These two materials have their own advantages and disadvantages. Cast iron cylinder blocks are heavy, but have excellent strength, stiffness, wear resistance and vibration absorption. Cast aluminum cylinder blocks, on the other hand, are lighter and have better heat dissipation properties, but are relatively weak in terms of strength, stiffness, abrasion resistance and ability to absorb vibration.
